The Chief Executive Officer will lead all activities and strategies. The CEO will set the direction for this complex national start-up with over 200 members across the U.S., as well as oversee day-to-day operations, program performance and financial health. The company will establish ground breaking leadership in public-private partnerships. The CEO will set the leadership and strategic direction for The Institute. 

The CEO must be committed to achieving the highest levels of performance, driving operational excellence, and providing a solid financial footing for the organization. He/she will oversee the organization’s member recruitment and relations, programs, infrastructure, sustainability and finances. The Chief Executive Officer will build relationships with public and private sector partners. He/she will provide the necessary leadership, vision and management to effectively grow this startup organization. 

The CEO will be the primary point of contact with Department of Energy in managing a successful public-private partnership, as well as the Regional and Satellite Manufacturing Centers. The CEO will build and lead a vibrant sustainable national institute through vision and possibility, leadership with action and results, growth and sustainability through value and service, creative and opportunity based public and private resourcing and energized organization practice, and sound financial operations. 

Key Responsibilities:

The Chief Executive Officer’s responsibilities will be to deliver effective member programs, support member recruitment, expand programs and operational infrastructure, and drive the growth and evolution of programs and services. 

He/she will ensure that the company is: innovative; pushing technology and advancing manufacturing; fiscally sound; and developing its programs to continue to be of the highest quality. The CEO will be the chief advocate for programs and regional operations, and is expected to speak prominently and passionately about American manufacturing leadership and advances, and benefits developed by the organization and its partners. 

Specific responsibilities include: 

Management and Operational Leadership 

  • Provide visible and informed operational leadership to the company every day and oversee program performance and vitality 
  • Develop annual business and operating plans to achieve the strategic objectives and mission for the Institute 
  • Ensure, by effective management and leadership, that operations and programs are professionally and efficiently organized and administered; ensure proper administration of contracts, and compliance with relevant policies and legal (including non-U.S.) requirements •
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains and motivates a diverse, high-quality organization 
  • Lead, retain and enhance an effective organization to support a culture based on innovation, competitive advantage, excellence and client service

Research, Technology and Development

  • Lead new program development efforts that serve the company's mission and allow it to increase the stature and credibility of American smart manufacturing innovation 
  • Passionately promote the mission with partners and the public to increase awareness of its mission and its successes 
  • Develop and manage large programs in manufacturing including but not limited to smart manufacturing, advanced sensors, data analytics, and controls 
  • Market products and services, and establishing processes to certify people and product

Financial and Budget Management 

  • Ensure that the organization adheres to a sustainable financial plan based on an annual budget reviewed and approved by the Board 
  • Manage financial performance to positively track budget and operating plan 

Collaboration and Partnering 

  • Nurture member relations and recruitment to ensure services and programs are providing value and meet or exceed expectations 
  • Work with Regional Operations to establish effective processes, information exchange and linkage to support technology transfer and workforce development in the field 
  • Work with the manufacturing sector, industry consortia, standards organizations, scientific and engineering societies, academia, individual businesses and other institutes of Manufacturing USA to: (a) demonstrate value and support further investment and funding to grow and sustain The Institute; (b) retrain our workforce of today; (c) develop our workforce of the future 

Milestones for Success for the Position

  • Articulate organization plan, operating processes and partner relationship model 
  • Hire staff and identify partners 
  • Develop technology and innovation development plan that matches and supports organizational charter, strategic mandate and operating goals 
  • Articulate a clear and public vision as to how the institute will make US Manufacturing measurably more competitive 
  • Develop a sustainability plan for the Institute based on input from key industrial partners and other stakeholders • Complete member negotiations and technology 
  • Construct roadmap that supports company and member goals 
  • Meet financial plan targets 
  • Lead active and engaged Board and committees 
  • Raise the profile of the company with private and public partners through successful implementation of technology projects and ongoing development and implementation of programs in support of the company's mission 

Professional Experience and Qualifications

As the company establishes itself, it is essential that the right leadership exists at all levels of the organization. The Chief Executive Officer will possess strong general management skills, have carried profit and loss responsibility, and bring experience in smart manufacturing and technology innovation. In addition, this executive will be highly credible to the partners the company serves. 

From a style perspective, the successful candidate will be expected to bring a business and technical perspective and be a visible and involved leader who places value on the objectives and advances for short- and long-term performance. A good strategic sense, sound operational and financial management, and exceptional interpersonal skills, are all important to the CEO’s success. 

Specific requirements include: 

  • Passionate, credible leader of Smart Manufacturing and its vision 
  • Background in manufacturing and data information transformation 
  • Expertise in manufacturing, including lean production and energy efficiency, resource sustainability, technology transfer and workforce development 
  • Organizational start-up/ramp-up experience 
  • P&L experience in a matrixed operating structure 
  • Experience managing large manufacturing / technology-oriented programs 
  • Extensive experience in establishing collaborative partnerships in the manufacturing industry; public-private experience a plus 
  • Experience with collaborations among government agencies, private industry and/or research institutions 
  • Strong business acumen, including technology investment, financial management, strategic planning, membership development and program management 
  • Ability to lead in diverse regional structure with organizational complexity, including government, corporate, and academic constituents of significant scale 
  • A track record of attracting financial support from public and private agencies, corporations, and government sources 
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and build an early stage organization from a technology and business strategy perspective, as well as to direct its day-to-day operations, including program development 
  • Strong track record for attracting, developing and retaining talent, and the ability to foster a highperforming team 
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, a history of public advocacy, including excellent public speaking skills before a myriad of audiences including members, business, media, and government leaders

An undergraduate degree with a technical discipline, i.e., engineering or the sciences, is required; an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a technical field or an MBA is highly preferred.
