Vice President of Business Development

Interface: This role will interface with all individuals within the organization, membership base, Department of Energy governance staff, vendors, and others as required to meet the needs of the business

Description: The VP of Business Development is the primary externally facing business interface. They will work to develop new members, expand the smart manufacturing opportunities, retain the base membership and grow the Institute. In addition, this role is accountable for the establishment of a technical education and workforce development program that leverages the Regional Network and for developing and executing a comprehensive strategic communications capability for the company with regards to marketing, communications, and public relations. The VP of Business Development will actively promote company capabilities to transform manufacturing and the workforce and communicate the success stories to the Nation. 

Essential Responsibilities:

Lead the following areas of the business: Membership planning, growth, membership maintenance and retention, Voice of Customer Interviews, Business Case Development support, Workforce Development and Education, Outreach and Communications. This role directly reports to the CEO and will also have direct reports.


  • Annual Strategic Membership Recruitment and Retention Planning and Execution
  • Responsible for developing a Membership “sales” process
  • Identify and develop additional revenue and investment sources 
  • Develops Branding Strategy and Markets the Institute and its programs and service offerings to appropriate external audiences’
  • Maintains the membership agreement of the Institute and manages the amendment process
  • Responsible for the orientation process and onboarding of new members
  • Develops targeted member/group strategy and aggressively markets the Institute and its value proposition to grow the targeted membership and/or group
  • Responsible for the creation of the appropriate informational materials such as newsletters, brochures, and feeds industry relevant information to the communications manager for external release
  • Develops program and plan annual industry member’s conference.
  • Responsible for Member retention and strategy
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that facilitate member recruitment and sustainment directly and through the Regional Manufacturing Centers.
  • Engages in business planning, strategic planning as member of leadership team
  • Leads Workforce development, education and certification process activities for the institute using a sustainability approach
  • Responsible for the development of the Knowledge Management System
  • Leads and implements a consistent external communication through a broad range of communications (social media, press releases, web sites, events, and related outreach mechanism)
  • Ensures the development of key organizational messaging, media, and reports
  • Builds media relations and networks to disseminate key organizational success stories and messages.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for the company's participation in industry, research workshops, conferences and expositions (booth at these venues).
  • Meet and exceed those items (including any additional items, as appropriate) assigned to this role by the CEO

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree Required: Bachelor’s Engineering or Business, MBA Preferred
  • Industry Experience Required: 15+ years, in Business Development, Workforce Education and Communications
  • Supervisory experience: 7+ years
  • Possess Strong personal relationship skills
  • Must be able to interpret policies and procedures and make accurate decisions accordingly
  • Successful track record of examples delivering results in the above areas of expertise
  • Possess Strong written, verbal, & presentation communication skills
  • Possess strong business & financial acumen, teamwork influencing, and coaching skills
  • Successful experience in driving relationships with Academia, Industry, and governmental organizations and in leading public-private not-for-profit organizations
  • Successful capabilities with office, internet, and other reporting and research tools common to this role
